Throughout the ages, the beauty and rarity of
gemstones has fascinated man. In less scientific times, gems held an aura
of mystery and spirituality and were sometimes used as medicine against
illness. Historically, gems were reserved for the ruling classes and
served as symbols of power, prestige and wealth. Today, gemstone jewelry
is purchased and enjoyed primarily for pleasure, in appreciation of its
alluring color, form and wear ability.
All gemstones are either minerals, rocks, or
are of organic origin. Some have their origin in the fiery gases of the
earth's interior, or in the volcanic lava streams. Others crystallize near
the earth's surface. Some new minerals are formed by re-crystallization of
existing minerals. Gemstones are found all around the world; from Brazil,
Columbia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Burma, Japan, and the United States.
Once mined, gemstones are fashioned into
several types of cuts. Most commonly known are the faceted shapes which have
flat angles that capture light and brilliance. These shapes include round,
oval, pear, square, marquis, and emerald or rectangle. Cabachon cuts,
available in the same shapes have a rounded surface with a flat base. All
colors are represented in gemstones; blue, red, green, pink, yellow, purple,
and orange. Some of the gems we offer are amethyst, aquamarine, peridot,
pink and green tourmaline, ruby, sapphire, emerald, chalcedony and lapis. In
addition red coral from the Mediterranean and many varieties of pearls,
including South Sea, Black Tahitian, and the exotic colors of pink, gray,
lavender and peach are interpreted in our 18K gold jewelry.
